CPI EuroMix supplied the high-quality coloured mortar to facilitate a resplendent brickwork finish for a site that is destined to become a global innovator in cancer research and treatment.
The building, the Oak Cancer Centre, is a crucial addition to the world-renowned Royal Marsden hospital and research hub in Sutton, Surrey. The £57m centre brings together more than 400 scientists and researchers into a space specifically devised for specialist collaboration.
Designed by architects BDP across a 12,500m 2 floor area, the striking, six-floor building was created to enhance the opportunity for staff and patients to interact with the healing qualities of nature. It includes 63 chemotherapy bays, with terraces and landscaped gardens instilling a sense of calm and wellness. With a connection to the natural world seen as essential to aiding patients’ mental and physical condition during treatment, BDP orientated the centre around the site’s existing trees.
For the building’s façade, the architects opted for a rustic finish that complemented surrounding greenery and met their overarching vision for a site that inspired positivity and a sense of serenity. The buff brickwork selected to achieve the desired exterior aesthetic was 65mm Bradgate multi-cream brick. The look was embellished with CPI’s natural mortar from their Northfleet factory.
Tough, reliable and able to withstand the harshest site conditions throughout Europe, Our dry mortars are available in a wide range of colours, each of which is designed to bring out the very best in brickwork.
Mixed and delivered to site in silos, 200 tonnes of dry silo mortar was used to supplement the centre’s brickwork façade installed by Lesterose Builders. It resulted in a time and cost-effective installation that fulfilled the architect’s ambition for a tasteful, impressive frontage that blended beautifully with the environment.
Stuart Russell, Commercial Manager, said: “We were extremely proud to have been selected to supply our industry-leading dry mortar for the Oak Cancer Centre. It is a wonderful facility that will further elevate the Royal Marsden’s reputation as being a world-leader in cancer research and treatment. The building’s superb design and aesthetic is a tribute to the incredible work that will take place inside. We are delighted to have played in fulfilling the architect’s vision for this wonderful project.”
Opened in June 2023, the Oak Cancer Centre has begun its journey to deliver a positive healthcare experience, where patients feel confident, informed, safe, reassured and cared-for. We would like to send its best wishes and thanks to all the specialists for their work at the facility, which will hopefully lead to further breakthroughs in the prevention and treatment of cancer.
